F-Secure DeepGuard, a new technology, constantly monitors the heart of your computer, ensuring that no malicious from programs can take over your computer. Many people misunderstand alerts their firewalls. It is very important to be able to have control over your system and to be aware of who or what is trying to gain access to it, and to know what communication is originating from your system. Firewall alert messages should never be seen as a nuisance.

A firewall protects your system from unwanted intruders. It also protects your system from programs that will send out or broadcast your personal information. You could think of a firewall as being a security system like the entry door on your residence. If you have no door, intruders could freely enter or leave your residence and have full access to everything in it. When you have a firewall on your system, it's like installing and then locking the door to your residence. No one can get in except you and those who are allowed access by you, whether you give them a key, "buzz them in," or you open the door for them when asked.

Firewalls that are doing their job will often tell you there's someone at the door (trying to communicate with or gain access to your system) and ask if you want to let them in. A popup appears telling you someone/something is trying to connect to you, or that a program wants access to the internet. The alert may show a name of a network, a program, a website, or even an ip address. The firewall will ask you what you want to do and it's up to you if you want to open the door (to your system) or not.

MC, can the native Vista firewall be turned in to a "fortress" even in outbound mode? If so can we get instructions? I am assuming it would be easier with this firewall as opposed to one of the well known alternatives.

Despite our request for a software firewall, many of you were still adamant about sticking with the firewall that's built into the router you're using on your home network. Fact is, if you don't use your computer outside of your home, you don't necessarily need a software firewall—and you don't have to run a separate application eating up RAM to get great firewall protection. However, as soon as you and your laptop leave the safety of your home, your laptop has essentially no protection if you don't set up some sort of software firewall. So while your router's firewall may be great, just remember: It can't follow you out the door. The free version lacks many extras of the pay version, however, such as automatic updates and the ability to break active connections. The HIPS component is called "Host Protection" in the interface. It provides four default levels of protection, which can be easily set with a slider and additionally customized item by item by advanced users. The default "optimal" setting only monitors the "most dangerous activities" (such as memory injections, driver loads, and a healthy list of system critical features -- auto starts, shell extensions, and internet settings) instead of all program activities. But these "optimal" settings lack protection from keyloggers, direct disk accessing, DNS API request monitoring, etc. You can check the types of reduced monitoring in "Settings..." > "Host Protection" > "Customize...".

Taking into consideration of the prices of Cable/DSL Routers (as low as $10 - $20 on sales with rebates on April 2004). If you are using Cable or DSL Internet connection, there is no reason not to buy a Router even if you do not have a Network. The price is right just for using the NAT Firewall, and the DHCP server. Cable/DSL Router do not control of applications that try to access the Internet, many users use an additional Software Firewall.

Personal firewall software prevents identity theft and the frustration of restoring your credit. Your financial data and password lists may all be stored inside your computer. Even a novice hacker with the right tools can steal your identity.

A firewall is to a computer what a security system is to a home. A firewall, like a security system, only allows certain traffic through specified doors or ports. A personal firewall product will alert you or take one of many predetermined actions when someone tries to tamper with your computer.

Comodo Internet Security Free Learn More

According to tests and reviews, the best firewall money can buy is free. The firewall in Comodo Internet Security successfully withstands the toughest testing and is judged by most reviewers to be versatile enough to serve the needs of expert users and those with only modest computer skills. The suite also includes basic security features, such as an antivirus program, but opinions about these are mixed. The good news is that you can choose to install the excellent Comodo firewall on its own, leaving your related security needs to other programs. If you prefer an all-in-one security solution, Kaspersky Internet Security 2011 doesn't lead the pack in any one area, but it provides robust protection overall, including a firewall that falls just short of the very best.

When you select the best firewall software, there are some elements for consideration. Top considerations should be, price, quality, easy to install and easy to use, and what the product together with the first software is Comodo Firewall Pro. I use it personally, and to be honest, I love it. But you need some knowledge on what processes to allow access and deny, and if you do not have the appropriate knowledge, you can allow a malicious process on your PC.

Basic firewall protection is critical for securing your PC. Simple firewalls (like the default Windows firewall) limit access to your system and personal information, and silently protect you from inbound threats. We also review basic third-party firewalls that have marginally better security than the Windows firewall, such as simpler features for monitoring programs that request outgoing Internet connections (we call this "outbound protection").

ZoneAlarm Firewall Free 9.2 has gotten quieter and more effective, and should be considered an excellent tool for replacing the adequate default Windows firewall with a stronger option that includes better outbound protection, antiphishing guards, and ZoneAlarm's behavioral detection network.

The changes made to improve the default firewall in Windows 7 are impressive, but the newest version of the free ZoneAlarm Firewall argues that Microsoft still has a long way to go. ZoneAlarm 9.2 introduces multiple new features to one of the world's oldest computer security programs including quieter outbound protection, behavioral detection from the ZoneAlarm Internet security suite, automatic Wi-Fi security setting activation, antiphishing protection, an overhauled ZoneAlarm toolbar, and 2GB of online storage for free.

Firewalls help monitor your system's communication between your network and the Internet to help stop intrusions and attacks. They are particularly useful for controlling the activities of Internet facing applications.

No other freeware product has more of a reputation for causing user angst than a firewall. To find a suitable product may involve a process of trial and error. A firewall should protect while not being too intrusive or too complicated to handle. This article gives you a selection of the best free firewalls available.

Firewalls come in two flavours; software based and hardware based. To avoid potential conflicts only install one (third-party) software firewall. You can improve protection, however, by using a hardware "firewall" (such as a router) and a software firewall in conjunction. Modern routers usually have a built-in firewall; consult your router documentation for more details.
